Review: Hearts at Stake by Alyxandra Harvey

Summary: On Solange’s sixteenth birthday, she is going to wake up dead. As if that’s not bad enough, she also has to outwit her seven overprotective older brothers, avoid the politics involved with being the only daughter born to an ancient vampire dynasty, and elude Kieran Black—agent of an anti-vampire league who is searching for his father’s killer and is intent on staking Solange and her entire family.

Luckily she has her own secret weapon—her human best friend Lucy—who is willing to defend Solange’s right to a normal life, whether she’s being smothered by her well-intentioned brothers or abducted by a power-hungry queen. Two unlikely alliances are formed in a race to save Solange’s eternal life—Lucy and Solange’s brother Nicholas, and Solange and Kieran Black—in a dual romance that is guaranteed to jump start any romance-lover’s heart.

Even fans of the genre who have seen it all will find a fresh read with kick-butt characters and family dynamics that ring true for all brothers and sisters—vampire or otherwise.

Review: Hearts at Stake was a fun read, to begin with. It was also very fast paced with a lot of action and romance all balancing out the plot almost to perfection.

The characters were lovable and I found myself loving Nicolas, the one Drake brother (out of 7) that this book was mainly focused on. He was a sweet/mean vampire and I loved him. Lucy, Solange’s best friend, who can kick some major arse was a fun character to read about.

I also liked that fact that it was so well written. It’s obvious that Alyxandra Harvey can write action and romance scenes very well. Something was always happening in the book and that’s what made it such a great read. The one thing I didn’t like was that sometimes I felt there was something missing or there was too much of something else. Something I wanted more romance where there was too much action or vice versa. Another thing was in-between a few chapters, I had a hard time figuring out what was going on in this book. I would have also liked to get to know more of some of the characters.

Grade: Go to fullsize image I really liked it.

Cover: B, I like some aspects of it, like the font and color scheme, but the model just doesn’t cut it for me.

Overall: For all those paranormal romance/action loves looking for a fast, fun read.

  1. Good review. I just read this one and reviewed it also. I really liked it but I think I liked Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side just a little bit more. If you haven't read that one yet, you might enjoy it.
